After a commanding victory, independent left-wing politician Catherine Connolly has been elected President of Ireland, marking a significant political milestone. At 68, Connolly becomes the country’s third woman to hold the office, having secured more than 60% of the vote and defeated her only rival, Heather Humphreys of the centrist Fine Gael party.

Her campaign centered on social justice issues — with a strong emphasis on housing reforms, workers’ rights and a sharp cut in military expenditure. Connolly has long been a vocal advocate for Palestinian state recognition and has condemned the ongoing war in Gaza as genocidal. During her candidacy she criticised both the European Union and the United States for inaction, and pledged that once in office she would personally travel to Palestine to witness the conditions on the ground.

The election result reflects a changing mood in Irish politics. Connolly was supported by a coalition of opposition parties, including the Social Democrats, Labour and Sinn Féin, none of whom fielded a candidate. Her decisive win signals growing public backing for progressive policies and an increased emphasis on human-rights and international solidarity — even as some of her positions may spark friction with the centre-right government.
