Hamas asks UN to pressure Israel to commit to truce

Hamas Chief Ismail Haniyeh has phoned the UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East, Nickolay Mladenov, asking him to put pressure on Israel to commit to a truce.

Haniyeh asked the UN envoy to follow up on international efforts aimed at lifting the Israeli siege imposed on the Gaza Strip since 2007, Haniyeh’s officer announced yesterday evening.

He communicated to the UN envoy the state of anger among the Palestinian people, which has erupted due to Israeli attempts to ignore the truce.

The UN envoy stressed, according to Haniyeh’s office, that he was exerting efforts to implement many projects in the impoverished enclave that would ease the blockade.

Haniyeh thanked Mladenov for his efforts, urging him continue coordination with regional and international parties, above all Egypt.
