The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, has said that the people of Gaza are enduring the most severe psychological trauma imaginable, with the majority of residents, especially children, suffering from overwhelming mental health distress.
Speaking at a press conference on International Human Rights Day, Türk described Gaza as a place marked by “suffering, loss, and fear,” as relentless attacks continue to devastate the enclave. He reiterated his condemnation of ongoing strikes that have hit civilians, displaced families, and damaged homes and shelters.
The rights chief emphasized that UN Security Council Resolution 2803 (2025) underscores the need to respect Gaza’s territory and called for an immediate ceasefire to prevent further harm.
Experts and UN agencies have warned that the psychological toll on Gazans is profound, with millions in need of mental health and psychosocial support due to prolonged violence, loss, displacement, and the collapse of basic services.
