Women Behind Bars

Inside the Walls: The Shocking Conditions of Female Prisoners in Damon Prison

Former detainees at Damon Prison describe a relentless life of deprivation and humiliation for Palestinian women behind its walls. According to survivors, women were confined for 23 hours a day, often denied showers and basic hygiene supplies, while food was served on the floor and frequently insufficient.

Sanitary and hygiene products were scarce, forcing the women to ration what little they had, and guards reportedly monitored intimate details — such as menstrual cycles — adding layers of psychological torment.

The situation was especially dire for pregnant detainees and mothers separated from their children. One former prisoner recalled assisting pregnant inmates without adequate medical support, highlighting the lack of healthcare and emotional trauma endured.

Upon release, survivors spoke of mixed feelings: relief at reuniting with family, yet deeply scarred by the months — or even years — of constant fear, neglect and repression. Advocacy groups warn dozens of women remain detained under similarly harsh conditions: subject to strip searches, frequent shackling, confiscation of personal clothing, unsanitary cells, minimal medical care, and severe psychological pressure.
