US Senators Demand Swift Probe into Israeli Rights Violations in Gaza

A group of U.S. Democratic senators has urged Marco Rubio, Secretary of State, to launch an immediate and thorough investigation into alleged human‑rights abuses by Israeli military units in Gaza. The call follows a classified report from the U.S. State Department’s Office of Inspector General, which reportedly identified “many hundreds” of potential violations — including killings, abuse, and torture — that still await formal review.

Senators Chris Van Hollen and Jack Reed led the letter to Rubio, joined by several colleagues including Jeff Merkley and Elizabeth Warren, warning that undue delays in adjudicating these allegations jeopardize U.S. laws — notably the Leahy Law — which prohibit U.S. security assistance to foreign units credibly accused of serious rights abuses.

The letter demands that the State Department implement the Inspector General’s recommendations without further delay and provide a clear plan — including required resources — to resolve the backlog before December 9.

The senators warned that failure to act promptly could render U.S. human‑rights protections meaningless and risk continued unaccountability for alleged crimes in Gaza.
