Beneath the rubble of the war-torn Gaza Strip lies a silent menace: thousands of unexploded bombs, missiles and other munitions that now jeopardise civilian lives and hamper recovery efforts. According to specialists, the challenge of clearing these remains may span decades.

Experts highlight the scale of contamination as “unprecedented,” pointing out that many of the failed weapons are buried deep within collapsed buildings or hidden under debris, making their detection and removal exceedingly difficult.

The danger is particularly acute as displaced families return and attempt to rebuild homes, schools and hospitals. Even a small shift in rubble or a child’s misstep near an object can trigger catastrophe.

Humanitarian organisations warn that the bomb‐littered terrain isn’t just a physical hazard — it also undermines reconstruction and access to aid, as clearance teams struggle due to lack of equipment, restricted access, and widespread contamination.

In sum, the legacy of conflict in Gaza isn’t over when the fighting ends. The literal remnants of war will cast a long shadow over the enclave’s future unless sustained, large-scale clearance and safety education are undertaken.
